Williams burst onto the popular music scene in 1955 when he recorded the only piano instrumental to ever have reached #1 on the Billboard singles charts – Autumn Leaves. His version became an American classic and still stands as the greatest selling piano recording of all time. Williams followed with more million-selling records. Born Free, The Impossible Dream, Til, Almost Paradise, Maria, Lara’s Theme from Dr. Zhivago, and the theme from Somewhere in Time, are only some of the 22 hits spanning four different decades.

A graduate of I. S. U., Drake University and the Julliard School of Music. Williams first played the piano when he was three years of age. He has performed at every major venue, including Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl and the White House. The latter has earned him the title of “Pianist to the Presidents” having played for eight chief executives. Additional career highlights include playing with the major symphony orchestras across the country. His most recent television specials for PBS brought in more than a million dollars in viewer contributions.

The first pianist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Williams is also the first (and so far only) artist to receive the Steinway Lifetime Achievement Award and was featured at Carnegie Hall for Steinway’s 150th Anniversary Celebration.

Roger Williams

Starting as a celebration of life in 2000 playing at various presidential libraries, Williams recently broke the record for the longest piano-playing marathon. Three years ago Williams continued the tradition and saluted his 80th birthday, along with Former President Carter at the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum where he played an astounding 13 1/2 hours of exhaustive pianoforte on October 1. Further continuing the tradition, Williams was found at Steinway Hall in New York City commemorating his 81st Birthday tickling the ivories and delighting all of those that come to celebrate with him!

2006 Williams broke his own record and played for 14 1/2 hours in Las Vegas, NV. 2007 Williams continues to celebrate life as well as spotlight the importance of music education in the schools. This outstanding event will take place in October 1, 2007 in Simi Valley, CA at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum.

Roger Williams Limited Edition Gold Piano by Steinway & Sons debuted at a marathon celebration in honor of Roger Williams. The only Artist showcase piano ever made in the 151 year history of Steinway and Sons.

Designed in the art-deco style the Roger Williams Limited Edition Gold Piano reflects architectural lines from that historic period, and features a goldmetallic finish accented by a high-gloss top coat. Lyrics to the first verse of Autumn Leaves decorates the piano’s perimeter. Moreover, falling autumn leaves appear between each line of the verse.

The stylized music desk is decorated with Autumn Leaves’ signature notes, while the piano’s cast-iron plate has a custom-painted landscape reflecting the brilliant colors and hues of autumn foliage.

Because Mr. Williams and President Carter are celebrating their eighth decade on the same day (and because Mr. Williams has performed for eight U.S. Presidents) Steinway will handcraft just eight of these limited-edition pianos. The nine-foot model D grand is expected to be offered for purchase at $258,000, while the seven-foot model B may be acquired for $178,000.

“I am delighted that Roger Williams has chosen to celebrate our mutual birthday this way,” says President Carter. “It will be a great opportunity for people across the country to hear some of America’s favorite melodies performed by one of our nation’s best-loved musical artists.”

One consuming passion for Williams is to permanently secure a place for music and music education in all schools. It is imperative to Williams that music does not get left behind and lost to an entire generation. He is known to open his rehearsals to offer the children a behind-the-scenes look as well as answer questions they may have. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger named Williams “Champion for Youth 2004” an honor Williams was especially proud to receive in addition to his many honorary doctorates. Roger is very proud to be part of VH1’s Save The Music.

Williams, living in Encino, CA, is the father of three and grandfather of five. His charm, energy and blazing keyboard velocity, as well as, his masterful musicianship continue to thrill audiences worldwide.

When asked what he sees for his career in the coming years Williams states, “The Best is Yet to Come”!
