One of the most critically acclaimed bands of the last three decades, 10,000 Maniacs, was founded in the fall of 1981 by Robert Buck, Dennis Drew, Steven Gustafson, John Lombardo and Natalie Merchant. Jerry Augustyniak joined in 1983. Together with artists like R.E.M., they defined college rock and create the first wave of alternative rock bands and what became known as the alternative rock format on FM radio.

Writing and performing powerful, danceable, and socially conscious original material in and around their hometown of Jamestown, NY, the group toured extensively.

10,000 Maniacs
In 1987, the Maniacs recorded and released In My Tribe, produced by Peter Asher (who also produced for James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt), this album broke quickly onto the charts and sold over two millions copies. The album features the hit singles, "Don't Talk, Hey Jack Kerouac, Like the Weather and What's the Matter Here." Within months, the band had already appeared on The Tonight Show, Late Night with David Letterman and Saturday Night Live.

In 1989, Blind Man's Zoo was the follow up album to In My Tribe and hit #13 on the Billboard charts and went platinum. It featured the singles, "Trouble Me and Eat for Two." The world tour supporting the album feature several European Festival, major amphitheatres in the U.S. and the renowned 4th of July concert with The Grateful Dead in front of 80,000 in Buffalo, NY.

In 1992, they released Our Time in Eden featuring the hit sings, "Candy Everybody Wants and These are Days." The disc sold more than 3 million copies and Rolling Stone's 4 star review called it a ...gripping new album...with a provocative, unnerving power. The year ended with a second SNL appearance and Natalie's announcement that she would be leaving the band for a solo career.

MTV Unplugged was released in Oct '93 featuring a remake of the classic, "Because the Night." The record sold almost five million copies. Mary Ramsey took over lead vocals for the band, filling the unenviable task of filling Merchant's shoes but she brilliantly rose to the occasion.

In 1997, the band released Love Among the Ruins for Geffen Records featuring a cover of Roxy Music's, "More than This," which went to the top of the Billboard charts and gave the band yet another platinum album.

In 2011, 10,000 Maniacs began the first half of their 30th Anniversary Tour and just began the second leg of that tour in June 2012. The band is currently working on a brand new album that should be released in the fall of 2012.

By the way, the band still resides in Jamestown, NY...
