THE WORST OF LAS VEGAS

In the Las Vegas Review Journal’s recently released Best of Las Vegas contest, the RJ’s Pick for Best Movie Theater was the Rave because, as the Review Journal wrote, “Seeing as how most movie theaters are in casinos in this town, it can be a bit of a drag when you’re taking the youngsters to see ‘Spy Kids 6: Zombie Holocaust’ and you have to pass acres of drunks, gamblers, drunk gamblers, and chain-smoking octogenarians glued to the video poker machines like wrinkly Velcro. And so what makes Rave Motion Pictures at Town Square so welcoming is the fact that it’s far away from any slot machines or cocktail waitresses bursting from their barely-there outfits like geysers of flesh.”

Personally I believe that Las Vegans' who attack Las Vegas's number one industry through ad hominem attacks are crossing the line. What do you think?

The 2008 Best Picture Nominees

What a bad year it was for the Oscars. Of the five nominees for Best Picture –

Atonement1. Atonement – Not for me. A solid English film not quite on the order of Howard’s End or Remains of the Day, it properly develops all the players, bogs down a bit in the middle, and perks up at the end. If I am ever stuck on a deserted island, and the choice is either Atonement or Doomsday, make mine Doomsday.

Juno2. Juno – An endearing, enjoyable movie that will let you watch it without regrets. However, as a losing Best Picture nominee, it is not quite on a par with Citizen Kane, Clockwork Orange, The Hustler, Lord of the Rings, or Taxi Driver.

Michael Clayton3. Michael Clayton – I enjoyed Michael Clayton. All the actors were well chosen. Tilda Swinton, especially, deserved the Best Supporting Actress Oscar she won for her role. But my mother fell asleep, and my sister-in-law continues to curse me for making her remain in the theater until it was over.

No Country for Old Men4. No Country for Old Men – The winner of this year’s Best Picture Academy Award, and a sort of comeback for two of my favorite filmmakers, The Coen Brothers. But it does not compare favorably with their earlier Best Picture nominee loser Fargo. And it is not even as good as four or five of their earlier unnominated pictures.

There Will Be Blood5. There Will Be Blood – A terrific Daniel Day Lewis performance (if you can stand it, you should see his earlier My Left Foot Oscar award winning performance) that won him his second Best Actor Oscar. Paul Anderson’s movie certainly has an Oscar cache, but what an ugly, abhorrent movie. And the silliness with the twins. How can anyone justify such an incomprehensible plot point?
