Imitation Elvis?

Imitation Elvis - I had the misfortune when on Elvis's recent birthday I turned on the Turner Classic Movies' Elvis Movie Marathon, and the movie playing was a filmed concert from his rhinestone cowboy, karate kicking, scarf wielding, imitation Elvis performances at the Las Vegas Hilton in the 1970's. I didn't stick around to find out if TCM would be showing Jailhouse Rock. However if any of you think you know Elvis through his Suspicious Minds, Viva Las Vegas, and Amazing Grace performances, do yourself a favor and take a look at genuine Elvis in Jailhouse Rock. When Elvis performs the title song it transcends any combination of Judy Garland's "Over the Rainbow," Fred Astaire's "Top Hat," and Gene Kelley's "Singing in the Rain." |

The Worst Movie Month of 2007

Having been chastized after the December newsletter for ignoring the call to ten best and ten worst lists, I am simply going to point out that May 2007 was the worst movie month in history. Spider-Man 3 followed by Shrek 3 followed by Pirates of the Caribbean 3 with I believe a Larry the Cable Guy movie squeezed in somewhere among those three. How many moviegoers were lost to DVD's forever after being forced by peer group pressure to see one two or all three of these monstrosities, and then worse yet having to go around and make believe they liked them.

Bobby Fischer

Bobby Fischer is Dead - In the first half of the 20th Century the most important international competitive two man event was America's Joe Louis knocking out Germany's Max Schmeling for the World Heavyweight Boxing Title. In the second half of the 20th Century the most important international competitive two man event was America's Bobby Fischer knocking out Russia's Boris Spassky for the World Champion Chess Title. If you didn't live through it, you ought to take the time to Google it and immerse yourself in the ultimate Cold War moment in time.

Vote for Your Favorite Las Vegas
Movie Theater at www.reviewjournal.com/bestoflv/.
I should be embarassed to do this, but knowing you Guru readers, I'm certain there will be plenty of votes for Neonopolis with their CineVegas Film Series, the Red Rock Station's IMAX and 3D presentations, Texas Station's late night weekend shows, the Cannery's all digital screens, and the Rave's location in the newest Las Vegas shopping center. |
