What's In a Name?

Matthew McConaughey, Shia LeBeouf, John Leguizamo - just because they are in the movies, do I really have to learn how to spell and pronounce their names. What ever happened to Clark Gable, Cary Grant, John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Tom Hanks. Send the Movie Guru your most ridiculous current movie star name, with your recommendation for an improved replacement name, and if you make me laugh, maybe I will send you two movie passes. For example - Matthew McConaughey = Matt Conway, Shia LeBeouf = Steve Leaf, John Leguizamo = Johnny Legs.

May Movies Now Playing...
Ghosts of Girlfriends Past - Starring “Matt Conway”, this is the worst movie of the summer so far. Obviously written by a computer programmed to graft every romantic comedy cliche onto the plotline of Charles Dickens' classic, A Christmas Carol. If you have already seen it, my condolences. Ghost of Girlfriends Past

Battle for Terra 3D - Not worthless, but not worth $10 admission price either. Maybe if it was a double feature with last year's Fly Me to the Moon 3D. Anyway, this movie is screaming Youtube 3D. Now that would be fun. Battle for Terra

X Men Origins: Wolverine - The best of the summer so far - NOT!!! This is such a mean-spirited downer with absolutely none of the humanity seen in Marvel's Iron Man. I will not forgive the writers, producers, and director who mercilessly gun down the only two decent people in the film just for the thrill ("Hey, let's kill these old people. No one will expect it, and Wolverine can keep the motorcycle.") X Men Wolverine

Upcoming May Movies...
Star Trek - Opens Tonight - A very enjoyable franchise movie. Director J.J. Abrams introduces each of our old friends in original ways, then intersperses them throughout a byzantine plot which allows for everything without cheating. And Spock is spectacular. Star Trek

Next Day Air - Opens May 8 - There is a definite market for these Black action comedies, and this one looks like it might deliver. Starring Donald Faison, Mos Def, and Mike Epps; these are names you might not know, but they are pretty funny guys. Next Day Air

Angels and Demons - Opens May 15 - If you loved The DaVinci Code, then start lining up for this one. But I have one question. Is there any difference between the two National Treasures and these two Dan Brown book-based movies? If Tom Hanks starred in the former, and Nicolas Cage starred in these, would anyone notice the difference? Now that's an idea. Please send me your scripts for National Treasure Meets DaVinci Code starring Tom Hanks and Nicholas Cage. The best script will win 10 free movie passes, but you have to sign over all rights to me. Angels and Demons

Terminator Salvation - Opens May 21 - Christian Bale takes over from Arnold Schwarzennegger (Arnold Schwartz from now on). Terminator was great. Terminator 2 was very good. Terminator 3 should be deleted from existence's hard drive. I don't know what to expect here, but I will be there at the Thursday midnight opening. Terminator Salvation

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian - Opens May 22 - Museum 1 was small and surprisingly enjoyable as the filmmakers stuck to the hackneyed family storyline of a divorced father's redemption. More than likely, in this "bigger" and "better" sequel, there will be no story at all, the better to overwhelm the audience with computer generated effects. But I could be wrong - NOT!!! Night at the Museum 2

Dance Flick - Opens May 22 - The Wayans Brothers, once comedy innovators, now at the bottom of their dried up well of ideas, this time attempt to spoof archetypal American dance flicks. There was an audience for this ten years ago. Now this genre is all about the video release. Dance Flick

Up - Opens May 29 - Pixar's latest, their first in 3D. I have always forced myself to go to Pixar movies for the sake of the kids. I always come out saying to myself - "not so bad." Then I always end up watching them over and over with the newer kids. Pixar makes good movies. Grown-ups could do worse than give Up a try. Up

Drag Me to Hell - Opens May 29 - The preview looks awful. The title is terrible. And I am sick of blood spatter at the movies. But this one is Sam Raimi's return from the rarified atmosphere of the Spiderman trilogy back to his beginning in films, the low-budget Evil Dead trilogy. We all know you can't go home again. But maybe Sam Raimi can. Drag Me To Hell
