| Ten Best Movies of 2008 ..according to the Guru |
1. Rambo - Sylvester Stallone proves that you can go home again. At 60 something years old, Stallone's Rambo hasn't lost a step. This movie is the best film of 2008.
2. Doubt - Meryl Streep eats Phillip Seymour Hoffman's lunch in this nun versus Father, what really happened, 1960's drama. Streep's performance is textbook, and the movie thrives because of it. |
3. Traitor - A small movie with Don Cheadle as an enigmatic figure moving about within a society of terrorists. Innocent victims, FBI and CIA machinations, ethical dilemmas: the movie tells its story without fanfare. |
4. Appaloosa - The best Western of 2008 - were there any others? Ed Harris, Viggo Mortensen, Jeremy Irons - an impossibly offbeat cast pulls off all the Western archetypes that are part of America's cultural heritage. |
| 5. Love Guru - For some reason I don't like Mike Myers, but when a guy makes you laugh your butt off, that guy deserves a tip of the cap. The best thing about Myers is he makes funny movies over and over without the forays into pretentiousness that plague the careers of comedians from Jerry Lewis to Steve Martin to Jim Carrey to Adam Sandler, and on and on and on. |
| 6. Redbelt - David Mamet's movies sometimes lose me, but this one is built on the skeleton of a potboiler, allowing Mamet to illuminate us about "Life" while sticking to a plot. Tim Allen is sensational in a small and important role. |
| 7. George A. Romero's Diary of the Dead - It makes me proud to be part of a hotel-casino whose movie theater was the venue for the exclusive Southern Nevada showing of Romero's latest "Dead" movie. It is as low-budget as his first, and just as enjoyable. |
| 8. The Happening - There is no doubt that this is a monumental failure in the resume of M. Night Shymalan. Anyone expecting Sixth Sense or Signs was surely disappointed. For me, the first twenty to thirty minutes puts it in my top ten. |
| 9. Cloverfield - Alot like Diary of the Dead in conception, but on a much bigger scale, this hand-held horror thriller works for me. J.J. Abrams is the new Steven Spielberg, succeeding at both directing and producing. |
| 10. Contempt (re-issue) - This showcase of the 1960's Jean Luc-Godard/Brigitte Bardot/Jack Palance/Fritz Lang behind the scenes look at international style movie-making is a visual and intellectual triumph. If you ever get another chance to see it on the big screen, do not miss it. |

| Five Worst Movies of 2008..according to the Guru |
| 1. Wanted - It starts out with enthusiam and ingenuity and collapses into absurdity. I don't know who to blame for movies like this. Probably the audience who comes out afterwards and tells all their friends, "You have to see "Wanted." |
| 2. Hancock - Will Smith, the latest declining Hollywood movie magnet (think Kevin Costner), is destroying all the good will he built up with Bad Boys, Independence Day, Men in Black, Hitch, etc. by selling out his fans with bad choices like I Am Legend, Hancock, and Seven Pounds. Hancock is the Emperor's New Clothes. And I am the little kid telling you the king is naked. |
| 3. Eagle Eye - It's Spielberg-Lite despite his name atop the credits. This is one of those impossible to believe, impossible to follow, deus ex machina action adventure movies that disappear into oblivion after their big splash at the box office. |
| 4. Max Payne - If I hadn't looked forward to this movie (I love watching Mark Wahlberg in movies), I would have ignored this imbecilic monstrosity. But I went and suffered because Mark Wahlberg beckoned, and just like in The Happening debacle, Wahlberg made his best effort, which is all anyone can ask. |
| 5. Tie - You Don't Mess With the Zohan & Quantum of Solace - Happy Madison is no more. Adam Sandler has been moved aside by Ben Stiller. It is Sandler’s choices like Zohan that finds the Christmas audiences patronizing Marley and Me ahead of Bedtime Stories. As for Quantum of Solace (the title alone qualifies it for the worst list), James Bond is no more. This latest incarnation of Bond strips away all the fun of the series and leaves us with an existential loser who fails even as he succeeds. |

| Three Best Movie Moments of 2008 |
1. Heath Ledger in Dark Knight – Watching Ledger’s portrayal of The Joker in the posthumous release of Dark Knight gave the same feeling that movie audiences must have had watching James Dean in Giant after his death in a car crash. On its own, the performance is terrific. With the facts of Ledger’s death floating in your consciousness while experiencing the film, this was the most intense movie moment of 2008. |
2. Mamma Mia’s credits – During the end credits for Mamma Mia Meryl Streep leads the cast in one last musical number with Streep shouting out to us in the audience something like “Do you want us to do another one?”, and me shouting out “Encore, Encore!” |
3. Twilight Premiere – It was bad enough that my co-workers knew that this would be a huge hit way before I had ever heard of it. But their enthusiasm led to a premiere party and 900 happy customers whose ticket purchases led to a $23,000 donation for a new kitchen and Christmas gifts for the kids at St. Jude’s Ranch for Children. |
