| South Point’s “Movie Guru” Offers His Thoughts on November Movies! |

1. Who’s the goof who chose to place in the American Gangster press kit the picture that reveals how the movie turns out? The RJ ran it on page 2 of the Neon, with a caption that gave away the ending.
2 .Probably the same guy who placed the picture of Robert Redford sitting on a desk talking with Meryl Streep into the Lions for Lambs press kit. Watching the movie I noticed that not only was there no such scene, but the two have absolutely no scenes together at all.
3. And did you notice that the same writer wrote both The Kingdom and Lions for Lambs? The Kingdom got all the action; Lions for Lambs got all the talk.
4. In the future forcing prisoners to sit through Lions for Lambs will probably take the place of waterboarding. Speaking of waterboarding – rent the movie The Battle of Algiers, the 1960’s Italian documentary style movie about France in Algiers.
5. Did anybody notice that tomorrow (Wednesday) at 6PM the South Point movie theaters will be presenting a live simulcast of Garth Brooks from Kansas City? Guru readers can get half price ($5) tickets to the concert by emailing me here and leaving your name and number of tickets requested. You can pick up your tickets at the movie box office beginning at 5PM tomorrow, one hour before the event. |

6. American Gangster is a good movie. Good acting. Good script. Good direction. Since the movie would be just as good if it was totally made up, I am not interested in the real true story that intrudes on my thoughts everytime someone tells me something.
7. In the Valley of Elah is the one current Iraq movie worth seeing. It was the best movie of the September-October orgy of R-rated releases. You will have to see it on DVD since it is no longer playing in theaters.
8. Did anyone actually think that parents would take their kids to Fred Claus, a PG rated family film “from the makers of Wedding Crashers” starring Vince Vaughan?
9. I give Jerry Seinfeld credit for spending years of his life on Bee Movie, and even more credit for promoting it everywhere. But couldn’t he have told us that this movie is for Jerry Seinfeld fans, not the general public.
10. We enjoyed all your contest entries and suggestions last month. If you didn’t get a reply or receive your free passes, it’s because you typed the wrong email address into the field. Please try again this month.

11. No Country for Old Men opens here November 21. Hopefully it is the Coen brothers return to their earlier efforts Blood Simple, Miller’s Crossing, and Fargo.
12. The Mist looks like something I will enjoy. Frank Darabont again adapting Stephen King (The Woman in the Room, Shawshank Redemption, and Green Mile).
13. Some of you seem to want to write reviews for the Guru newsletter. Send whatever you want. We will print the most interesting points of view in the December Guru.
14. The curse of changing movies times is at its worst during Thanksgiving and Christmas. On days you go to the movies, always re-check your movie times in the RJ and at SouthPointMovies.com.
15. We open 3-D Beowulf beginning Thursday night at 9:15PM. If no one goes – no more guru. |
