| James Dean Movies |
I am going to link you to a six minute taped excerpt from a 1954 live GE Theater television presentation starring Ronald Reagan and James Dean. James Dean’s stardom is based on his riveting performances in East of Eden and Rebel Without a Cause. This performance may find you questioning Dean’s staying power if he had not died young in a car crash. In fact I will argue that Ronald Reagan eats Dean’s lunch on this show.

| Lou Gehrig Movies |
Yankee legend Lou Gehrig once made a cowboy movie. I only know this because I received it in the mail the other day, a 1938 low budget western starring the “Pride of the Yankees,” Lou Gehrig. Any and all Yankee fans must find and see this movie. The title is “Rawhide.” The movie is a genuine pleasure. |

May 14 – Robin Hood
Oh my gosh. It’s Russell Crowe reteaming with Gladiator’s director Ridley Scott with Cate Blanchett as Maid Marion. Ten years later they are trying to catch lightning in a bottle for a second time. However you can’t go home again, and as much as I want to see this movie, I have little hope that they can pull it off.

May 14 – Just Wright
Queen Latifah wants you to turn off the NBA playoffs and watch her instead in this uplifting basketball movie. Why do they always release football movies around the Super Bowl, baseball movies around World Series time, and basketball movies during the NBA playoffs or March Madness?

May 14 - Letters to Juliet
Counterprogramming for the young ladies, who have been enthralled with Amanda Seyfried’s previous performances in the recent films, Dear John and Mamma Mia. |

May 21 – Shrek Forever After in 3D
Let me explain something once and for all. When you pay $3 extra to see a movie in 3D, you do get to keep the 3D glasses, if you choose not to recycle them in the hallway receptacles. But the $3 upcharge is not about the glasses, but is about the extra cost of making the movie in 3D. So don’t bring back your 3D glasses each time there is a new 3D movie and try to get in for $3 less. It’s not going to happen. |

May 21 – MacGruber
This is a Saturday Night Live branded movie which along with its Saturday Night Live pedigree includes in its cast Val Kilmer. Val Kilmer’s Doc Holiday in the movie Tombstone is so classic, that no matter how low he has fallen, we keep the faith with Mr. Kilmer.

May 27 – Sex and the City 2
My mother watches the television repeats whenever Desperate Housewives repeats are not showing. That may not be germain to this discussion, but it freaks me out. The first Sex and the City movie was a huge success. I am certain that this sequel will be even more huge. I assume all the women love Sex and the City because they love Big. |

May 28 – Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
This is the May movie I most want to see. On the surface it shows all the trappings of a bloated Hollywood escapist failure. But I enjoy escapist failures like Laura Croft: Tomb Raider, The Mummy Returns, and most recently The Losers.

| A final note about May movies. I expect all my readers to attend a minimum of two of the above movies, though three or four would be more in order for a Guru follower. As you see them, please keep me informed. Free VHS movies to anyone who shares their thoughts at movies@southpointcasino.com.

| Best Movies of 2009 |
| I know that I am supposed to list my best movies of 2009 in this month’s Movie Guru, but after reading your contributions to my list, there was just too much overlap. We all agreed on Quentin Tarentino’s Inglourious Basterds, Best Picture Winner Hurt Locker, Hangover, Informant, Star Trek, and District 9. I was left on my own with the Coen Brothers’ A Serious Man, Woody Allen’s Whatever Works, Paranormal Activity, and my three favorite family films Ponyo, Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Princess and the Frog.

| Movies, Movies, Movies - Free Movies |
I donated my 16mm film collection to the UCLA Film Archive in 1986. I donated my 35mm films to the UNLV Film Department in 2003. I have given away all my Laserdisks and Betamax tapes and movie collectibles to friends and strangers over the years. Now the time has come to rid myself of my treasured VHS tapes. Not the Titanics and Forrest Gumps and Godfather Part III’s that I gave away a long time ago. But my remaining auteur films, singular movies whose filmmakers’ artistic signatures are as identifiable as those of Van Gogh, Picasso, and Andy Warhol. If you would like one of these classic films please send your name to movies@southpointcasino.com. I will leave a specially selected VHS for you at the Bell Desk. If after watching the movie you care to share your thoughts, send them to me. I will publish them in the next Movie Guru.
By the way – for those of you who have made it this far. Keep your eyes open for The Spider/The Square, a short and a feature filmed in Australia and playing together, which haven’t opened yet in Las Vegas. When they do, don’t miss them. They are quite the thrill ride. |
